Has anybody else but me noticed, that the discussion of health care reform on almost the entire spectrum of the news, focuses solely on the cost of any reform, but zero discussion on the reasons for needing reform? These news shows are truncated and tunnel-visioned into the costs of raising taxes, end of story.
These news programs are _not_ talking about the denial of care to individuals, the fact that the costs are out of sight, the enormous profits made by company CEO's and related health care officials, the fact that not only is a large segment of the population not covered, but an even larger segment is insecure in it's coverage, and at the whim of the health-care industry, and the economy. The health care consumer has no power in today's America (it's not the only consumer segment that has no power in today's America, but it is the most profound).
I just listened to about three minutes, all I could stand, of Face the Nation. The moderator sitting in for what's his name focused entirely on the taxes with talking with Charlie Rangel, and seemed to be having a cozy tet-a-tet with Orrin Hatch, and almost commiserating with him. It was so obvious.
It finally jelled with me that that the issue of taxes for universal health care is _all_ these news programs are interested in -- and they dig, dig, dig on that angle only.
There is nothing about solving the problem.
