Tamm also expressed frustration that the Times took more than a year to publish a story on the program (Bush administration officials convinced the paper to withhold the story, which they’d known about since before the 2004 election).

Great post inventor!!!!!

Hopefully ED will read up on this and begin commenting on "Why the MSM whether liberal [ha] or conservative, is NOT doing its Constitutionally protected job of providing the public with "unmanipulated" facts, "all the facts" to the matter of a strong Neo-Con presence and control of "our " government.

Example is the Isikoff article Dec 22, 2008

http://www.newsweek.com/id/174601/output/print

Where was ED, and Randi, or even the right wing "talkies" on the follow up on this matter???
Where was MSNBC, or CNN or even the BBC on following up on this, to get to the bottom?

Whose watching the "store"; the press, the Fourth estate?

What Indeed are these talking heads "watching" and most importantly "reporting upon"? Just LOOK at what is on "our" air waves today!

Both the left as well as the right are a PLOY, whether it be the Press, cable news, or the nation's Menu [sports, entertainment, etc] are keeping Americans in their homes, NOT protesting this cabal organized during the Reagan years, continuing on with BUSH I, Clinton, and BUSH II. IS it gone??? Apparently Not, for Obama has not put the "heat on" for the Justice Department to begin "prosecuting" the war crimes committed ! Why Not? How much does it take to Begin?

If the media were to get on board the democracy train, instead of the Neo-Con express, this country would BEGIN to turn around, CHANGE for the people, not the corporate elite and the "banking cabal" that has been going on for decades. They got caught with their greedy hands in the cookie jar. But NO ONE is really carrying forth with the commitment to BRING JUSTICE to bear. It's all a pony show of rhetoric, By-pass, and "were working on it". It does not happen !

As Joseph Goebbels knew and projected in his philosophy to "controlling" a nations "direction" thru repetitive Absence to facts {Propaganda .... misinformation, selective choices, and misdirection} can and will orchestrate the mood , activities and even "the beliefs"of a people. All that is necessary is to have control of information!

The Nazis used rhetoric, images of strength, "fatherland=patriotism", and LIES , repetitive lies- to Bring forth an authoritarian people- IGNORANT to the "facts of the matter".

QUOTE
"Naturally the common people don't want war. But, after all, It is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship.

Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger.
It works the same in any country." -Hermann Goering 1933 Riechstag

And for what, was this done......? POWER , CONTROL of the RESOURCES........and MONEY for the German and American capitalists/bankers involved in this charade!

QUOTE
"War is a racket. It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives. A racket, is best described, I believe as something that is not what it seems to the majority of people. Only a small "inside" group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war, a few people make huge fortunes ."Gen. SMEDLEY D. BUTLER , USMC- 2 time MOH recipient.

To do any and all of the above, the MSM must be made an active partner whether Liberal, Progressive or Conservative in view point. As Goering said, ...."it is always a simple matter to drag the people along"!

When a major media mogul like the New York Times holds back from doing its "constitutional and ethically protected right" to protect this nation [ the people, not the Corporate elitists ], then the fundamentals of democracy have been Lost! Thank you NYT, WP, WSJ and both the national and cable "news services". FEAR is NOT suppose to be an ON GOING part of the Fourth estate. And neither is GREED! Where are the Walter Cronkites and Edward R. Murrows!

QUOTE
“In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.”-President Dwight D. Eisenhower

Control of the press,[delays, covering DOWN, fabrication, etc, etc] are the means of "soft fascism" moving to the hard right! And Neo-Cons are frothing at the bit, to MOVE ON. OBAMA has a dilemma, especially with the number of left speaking Neo-Cons in his administration.

QUOTE
"The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) is the American Branch of a society which originated in England ... (and) ... believes national boundaries should be obliterated and one-world rule established."-- Professor of History Carroll Quigley, Georgetown University, in his book "Tragedy and Hope".

"Corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed."
Abraham Lincoln, in an 1864 letter

Changing back from a corporate owned [bought & Paid for Congress] to a constitutionally "protected" nation WILL NOT occur until the "press" becomes unincorporated and Reagan policies have been "withdrawn". The age of the Neo-Con will continue until America stands up to this demise of the nations "core values" by a propaganda machine that has been instilled in the American psyche. MORE is not best!

People need to turn off the TV and their ipods , as they are today.......and move into the streets! But FIRST, the PRESS must BE attacked for what it is and what it has become!

CHANGE and democracy only comes with the truth, the facts of the matter. ALL THE FACTS!.

QUOTE
“…truth requires people to believe in it as a force, independent of material interests and intellectual dogmas and to relentlessly seek it. Truth is a belief system……..if we cease to believe in it, it will disappear.” Michael Polanyi, scientist and philosopher

QUOTE
"Not only do we have a right to know, we have a duty to know what our Government is doing in our name. If there's a criticism to be made today, it's that the press isn't doing enough to put the pressure on the government to provide information." Walter Cronkite - 3/28/02, PBS

also note that this was the so called liberal NYT... and note that they asked the Bush administration if they could run it. IE why the F were they asking for permission if they are a liberal media....

this should be noted all over... NEVER go to the NYT if you are a whistleblower... or a liberal... they will rat you out also... note they did not rat out sources that support righty objectives like Judith Millers source to go to war...

I will also post some more info about th NYT and the CIA involvement with them and the media. in my next posts.
inventor
Note the NYT has a serious background with working with the CIA....

Note that over 400 reporters from all media were on the CIA's payroll, note they never say they quit, they just are not paid, and note in the links the CIA said in emergencys they can have them on their payroll, in cases of national security, well to a righty everything is a matter of national security.

anyone want to bet that many of these CIA reporters pose as liberals in the media... for their cover...

During the last half of those ten years, sandwiched between Watergate coverage on one end, and Congressional investigations of the CIA on the other, the media showed some interest in examining their own intelligence connections. The first shoe was dropped by Jack Anderson in late August, 1973, when he revealed that Seymour Freidin, head of the Hearst bureau in London, was a CIA agent. Freidin, already in the news because the Republicans paid him $10,000 in 1972 to spy on the Democrats, confirmed Anderson's story. At that point William Colby, the new CIA director, was asked by the New York Times and the Washington Star-News if any of their staff were on the CIA payroll.

James (Scotty) Reston of the NYT was satisfied with an evasive answer, but when the Star-News editorial board met with Colby, they made some progress. The other shoe dropped with an article by Oswald Johnston on November 30: the Star-News learned from an "authoritative source" (Colby) that the CIA had some three dozen American journalists on its payroll. Johnston named only one -- Jeremiah O'Leary -- who was one of their own diplomatic correspondents. (The Star-News stopped publishing in 1981, at which point O'Leary joined Reagan's national security staff. From 1982 until his death in 1993, he was with the Washington Times.)
...
One enterprising researcher took this 29 percent figure, and extrapolating from figures on CIA expenditures for covert operations, found that the cost of propaganda in 1978 was around $265 million and involved 2,000 personnel. Comparing this to figures for other news agencies, he concluded that the CIA "uses far more resources in its propaganda operations than any single news agency.... In fact, the CIA propaganda budget is as large as the combined budgets of Reuters, United Press International and the Associated Press."[8]

CBS took Daniel Schorr off the air after he leaked the Pike committee report. This was most likely a convenient opportunity for William Paley, chairman of CBS, who didn't approve of Schorr's interest in the network's own CIA connection. Former CBS News president Sig Mickelson, who by 1976 was president of Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty, said that in October 1954, Paley called him into his office for a friendly discussion with two CIA officials. Schorr mentioned this on Walter Cronkite's show, and in an op-ed piece for the New York Times (Arthur Hays Sulzberger, the late publisher of the Times, had been cozy with the CIA also).

Journalists as directly paid by the government. As late as 1996, then CIA Director John M. Deutch stated that the agency maintained the right to use U.S. journalists or their organizations as cover for intelligence activities. In the same year, former Time editor Henry Grunwald and former New York Times columnist Leslie Gelb, then members of the Council on Foreign Relations signed onto a report backing giving a "nonofficial" cover to CIA agents in the form of journalists or religious workers.

Changes of journalists’ job status by a government through editors and editorial staff. When US and Salvadoran government officials disliked Raymond Bonner’s New York Times article on a massacre in 1981 in El Salvador, they put pressure on the Times to have him removed. Mr. Bonner was sent to cover sub-Saharan Africa. As Carl Bernstein noted in 1977, the opposite also happens: "A foreign correspondent with ties to the Company [the CIA] stood a much better chance than his competitors of getting good stories."

I probably has something to do with this story as well. The NY Times is backing away from the 1in 7 detainees returned to battle story.
QUOTE
Jehl said he would have used only confirmed cases in the lead paragraph. Although he and Baquet defended the article as still worth the front page, I think the difference between one in 20 and one in seven made it a much less compelling story that should have run inside, with stronger warnings that The Times had its doubts. (On Friday, the paper published an editor’s note saying the article should not have accepted the premise that all the prisoners were engaged in terrorism before their capture, and should have used the one-in-20 figure.)

QUOTE
Bumiller wrote some pointed cautions into her article: There was no way to authenticate the 45. The activities of only a few of the 29 named individuals could be verified independently. “Many of the 29 are simply described as associating with terrorists or training with terrorists, with almost no other details,” she wrote.

This was brought up in the judiciary committee hearing today as well. One of the detainees that "returned to battle" did so by returning to his home country and writing a book about his experiences at Gitmo. Another was captured in Russia and admitted to a crime only after torture was used.

It sure looks like this whole story was intentionally blown out of proportion to suit the needs of the CIA.

If you would like "proof" of MSM capitulation at best , but MSM 's active role in "promoting "NEO-CON thinking"[=talking points created to either distract or cover-up FACTS on the Matter] READ investigative journalist RUSS BAKER's FAMILY of SECRETS! It will provide the reader with the collusion of the MSM with the BUSH cabal[Karen Hughes, Karl Rove, etc ]which started way back in the 60's with "W's" MILITARY HISTORY and the use of "connections" that POPPY BUSH had established both in the banking/WS crowd, the TEXAS OIL cartel and the press, used to get W out of Vietnam and then to cover-up the facts! WOW! What an eye opener!

Keep up the information stream "inventor"! rolleyes.gif This country will NEVER change while the "press" is bought & paid for {DIRECTED} by the corporatists! Americans need to "realize" what comes from a "continuation" of this system. Joseph Goebbels' legacy is in full operation in AMERICA. We need a "Judgement at Nuremberg" here-now! And the press is the key!

It affects the way we look at domestic and foreign policy and shapes our view of events and our ability to address the problems of the world. Most journalists will tell you that their intentions are good, but new challenges regarding the news media are constantly emerging that impact the objectivity, and even the authenticity of today’s information, such as:
-Consolidation of news organizations, which has the potential to significantly influence the objectivity of news reporting and the credibility of news sources.
-Networks are under increasing pressure to make a profit on their news shows - this was not the case ten years ago. Since the major source of income for most networks comes from advertising, this new dynamic raises the question, “Will news that adversely affects an advertiser be reported objectively, or at all?”

-Pressure on competing news organizations to “be first with the story.” Has this reduced the accuracy of information presented to the public?
****A news media industry that is a powerful force in shaping national and worldwide opinion. If the news media are the world’s watchdog, how can society protect itself from abuse of this power?

As this report will document in detail, conservative talk radio undeniably dominates the format:
Our analysis in the spring of 2007 of the 257 news/talk stations owned by the top five commercial station owners reveals that 91 percent of the total weekday talk radio programming is conservative, and 9 percent is progressive.
Each weekday, 2,570 hours and 15 minutes of conservative talk are broadcast on these stations compared to 254 hours of progressive talk—10 times as much conservative
talk as progressive talk.

So this is how the Bush admin was able to get Judy Miller's stories of WMDs in Iraq in the NYT.
It was interesting to read all of her articles, so she must have been one of a few handpicked so-called "journalists" to report all of those interesting facts about Iraq in those articles.
