of course media is controlled. suggest you pick up shenkman's "just how stupid are we?". the american electorate has several problems many of which are self-inflicted.
1) time constraint-to be a good citizen is time consuming. to read up on the issues from both sides takes time that most will not have.
2) unwliingness to look at both sides-this is very crucial and goes along the lines of "i've always voted democratic" or "our family is republican". consistant closemindedness is abdication of good citizenship.
3) single-issue focus-this is along the lines of "i'm pro-life". well that is all well and good but life isn't just about being born. unwillingness to study what candidates, legislators actually mean by their statements and actions is abandoning your duty.
4) what reporters can report-this is the thrust of the complaints of the so-called liberal media. certainly reporters tend to vote democratic but they do not control what is reported. editors and publishers do that and they are more likely to be republican. still it really doesn't matter because mutilple sources must be utilized in order to best decide issues.
the american people are stupid. they refuse to see things in front of them and they refuse to dig when things are hidden from them. this why tv, sound bytes and negative campaigning are so successful. those who use these agitprop tactics can count on their success because they can count on the american people not doing the job required as citizens.
