Full Version: Conservatives, I feel your pain

Yep, when Reagan was elected, I saw what I believed in slipping away, and then in 1994, my low point, the end of the FDR era for good, when the Republicans took over Congress. I felt that progressive values would never again be in front in my lifetime. Luckily, the Republican era is now over, destroyed by their own corruption in record time, and the worst President in history.

The level of disaster for the party - and more importantly, to the philosophy of modern conservatism - is quite comparable to the 1932 elections, the beginning of the FDR era.

The Reagan era is over, dead as a doornail. Conservatism will join communism on the trash heap of history, a dead and discarded political philosophy.

You guys are trying to put a good face on it, but you KNOW you are one month away from the end of your era, where all you'll be able to do now is sit on the sidelines, whining about the Dems, but not being able to do anything about it.

The Obama era will begin. It will be like no other. Discarding the selfish egocentric viewpoints of the right, we will build a country that believes in the power of Americans to work together to goals that help everyone, and bring a lasting peace instead of constant total war.

It's tough to go through this, no doubt about it. You'll see that liberal philosophies work, and it will drive you nuts, just as it did the conservatives of the thirties, forties and fifties.

You'll likely never see a conservative government in the United States in your lifetime.

Get used to it.

Hmmm .... your essay sounds pleasing to my ear but I do not believe the above statement will happen

It will. It is now discredited, the idea that deregulating the markets is anything but madness. After Reagan started the deregulation boom, we've had bubble after bubble, and we've had one financial industry after another destroy itself in an orgy of greed and corruption, starting with the S&L crisis in the eighties.

Conservatism is dead.

I'd like the GOP to be smashed down so small we could drown it in a bathtub.
(no apologies for the turn on a quote)
But this isn't conservatism... it hasn't been since the mid-80's. This is some kind of cancer that must be cut out of the American cultural body. This is the rich and powerful gone power-mad. Arrogance was the norm. Greed was the God. The weak were to be ignored, or worse, exploited. They think they are patriots, but they are not. They think they stand on a higher moral ground, but they do not. They gamed the vernacular. They embraced, learned, spouted the Gingrich text until it became imprinted on almost every American. The super-meme was born.
The architects will rot in hell.
Book it.

You speak my language. I am tired of even liberal apologists for this scum. Call these people who they are; traitors!

Conservatism no longer exists.

Their biggest cheerleader just nationalized our banking system.

When Obama becomes president in January, with a democratic Congress, expect further changes.

Muh nipples is hard already pardner.
There remains the 64 trillion dollar question of course: Too broke to fix? But that's another thread.
I hope Obama is holding back a bit.
Is there a font size big enough on this forum for the word "change"?

Yeah, whining -- even as things get better in our country! Even as they are treated like full fledged citizens and not like terrorists for disagreeing with our president. Even as their welfare is considered when healthcare, energy and environmental policies are mapped out. Even as their Constitution is restored and their rights respected again. Even as their sons, daughters, wives and husbands are brought home from the war and treated with dignity and compassion. Even as their jobs are improved and kept here in America. Even as their wages increase and their taxes decrease. Even as their natural world is improved by protections from pollution and global warming. Even as their Social Security is insured for their future and their children's future. Even as...

In Syriana George Clooney spoke of those in power and said that they truly believed they were patriots; that the despicable things they did they did for the good of America. They KNEW they were lying, they new they stole, they knew they committed murder. Look at Palin's interview recently where she was asked a direct question: "Should it be criminal if a woman aborts a baby, and if so, should the mother be charged with murder." Now you KNOW that's what she thinks. But she lied. "I'd council them" was her prepared answer. And why? She knows she has to get into power and THEN put in laws to first overturn Roe v Wade and then move on to making it a felony. And she knows she lied, but how else is she going to get into power and push what she sees as "good for America" i.e. HER beliefs? She sees herself as most fundamentalist nut-job right wingers se themselves: "I'm-superior-and-I-have-to-do-this-to-you-for-your-own-good".

I can understand a religious zealot's lie, believing she is patriotic, but I can't understand how lying us into war in Iraq so that Big Oil corporations could do as they wish with the oil supply there and all of the neocon corporatists can make a few billion could possibly be seen by those criminals as "patriotic". Unless they disconnected their greed (while satisfying it) from their "patriotic" motive of getting America's "foot" in the door in the Middle East power structure...

It's possible that we needed the bailout, and it's possible that we are at a very precarious moment in economic history.

But at the same time, I can't help wondering if this is just some plot, to provide one last payout to the biggies, and to deplete our coffers so badly that the next president, our Obama, is strapped and we as a nation are totally unable to do anything, anything at all -- and the nation collapses into a corporate police state.

I know how it sounds.

I'm just worried that, with the collapse of bees, the collapse of fisheries, overpopulation, flooding in some places and desertification in others, birds confused due to global warming, human beings' brains dimished by the poisons poured into the environment -- well, it's probably best I don't dwell on this.

Sorry to depress you all.

Conservatism is a term used to describe political philosophies that favour tradition, where tradition refers to various religious, cultural, or nationally defined beliefs and customs. It is difficult to define the term precisely because different cultures have different established values and, in consequence, conservatives in different cultures have differing goals. (Some conservatives seek to preserve the status quo or to reform society slowly, while others seek to return to the values of an earlier time, the status quo ante).

Is this what is dead? Or is it really Neo-Conservatism that is what this thread is really referring to as "dead"?

Well, needless to say, Conservatism isnt dead by a long, long, shot.....and if, if, Mr. Hopey Hopey Change Change wins in November, you'll probably have an 8 year run at the top. Then, the Conservatives will be back, just like the Libs came back after Bush 42....it will continue to go back and forth, long, long, after we're all gone. To think that either party, or their idealogy, is dead, well, you'd have to be from another planet........I guess that explains it, huh, GoU? laugh.gif

It looks bad for the Conservatives but politics is cyclical for in that regard, I would
agree with Denny. What's important is that Obama has a successful Presidency
for remember our nightmare is almost over for 80% of the country is waiting
for GW Bush to leave office.

Like the parent who, while beating a child (or whipping him/her with a belt), keeps saying, "This hurts me more than it hurts you."
Palin's answer to dealing with a victim of rape or incest is, "I'd counsel her". About what? If you're going to counsel a child about watching out for Uncle Dave, or walking alone back from school, it might be just a tad too late.
Mindless, religiously-based gobblygook, finding its way into government. Don't you just love it?

Denny Crane!

Translation: "As usual, I've got nothin'!"

You have no understanding of history, nor do you admit the damage you've done to the country. In eight years, when you all are STILL out of power, and the ONLY Republicans that can win an election is one that runs AGAINST everything YOU stand for, you'll realize, but never admit, that I am correct.

Your philosophy is discredited. Dead as a doornail.

Degulation of markets, a huge mistake, won't happen again.
