His new anti war song off his new album...Time The Conqueror
The Drums of War
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lc-i98oNQ5Y

"Roll out the drums of war
Roll up the cover of the killing floor
Roll out the drums of war
And let's speak of things worth fighting for
Roll out the drums of war

Time Comes when everything you ever thought you knew
Comes crashing down and flames rise up in front of you

Roll out the drums of war
Roll back the freedoms that we struggled for
What were those freedoms for?
Let's not talk about it any more
Roll out the drums of war

Whatever you believe the necessary course to be
Depends on who you trust to identify the enemy
Who beats the drums for war?
Even before the peace is lost
Who are the profits for?
Who are they who bear the cost
When a country takes the low road to war

Who gives the orders, orders to torture?
Who gets to no bid contract the future?
Who lies, then bombs, then calls it an error?
Who makes a fortune from fighting terror?
Who is the enemy trying to crush us?
Who is the enemy of truth and justice?
Who is the enemy of peace and freedom?
Where are the courts, now when we need them?
Why is impeachment not on the table?
We better stop them while we are able
Roll out the drums of war

Whatever you believe the necessary course to be
Depends on who you trust to identify the enemy
Who took this country to war?
Long before the peace was lost
Who are the profits for?
And who are they who bear the cost
And who lay down their lives?
And who will live with the sacrifice
Of our best and brightest hopes,
The flower of our youth,
Of freedom, and the truth? "

I LOVE Jackson Browne! Can't wait to hear the rest of his album. The lyrics of this song are awesome and I love the driving, pounding melody. Makes me want to march in the streets... bounce.gif

Hey Linda,

I've been a huge JB fan since the mid 70's. Played his music (actually segued an intro of I thought I was a Child into Thunder Road at a show we did a couple of weeks back (they are both in F and it seemed to work in my mind).

I followed him close (was in the house the night Running on Empty was cut, was at the No Nukes ralley in DC...) and have recently had some thoughts as to how can one (me) be so seriously at odds with an artist's take on things and be so devoted to that artist's work at the same time...

My wife gave me the new CD last week and I took it to the sailboat and gave it a listen... and the lyrics seemed a bit cliched (sp?) to me... like he was reading... talking points? Way too in your face and direct - but about as direct as Lives in the Balance was now that I think of it.

But I do love Jackson Browne's stuff - and have styled my piano playing after him.

But that's not all, my wife also got me the new CSN&Y DVD "Deja Vu" and its THE SAME THING! If you haven't seen it (my guess is) that you'd love it. It was interesting for sure and Neil (another player that I have tried to immitate on guitar and keyboards for years) took the heat (to his credit) for sure. But it was funny how the weekend on the boat left me with a kind of where do I really stand with all of this? I mean I love the life's work of these guys but feel that they just have at all wrong.

Does that make me a hypocrite for buying (and enjoying) their music?

Would appreciate your thoughts.

It IS pretty odd, Clark. When I listen to Jackson Browne or Neil Young, I hear the same anti-war sentiments that have driven their music for years. The fact that I agree with these sentiments is probably a big factor in the reason why I listen to them. Was there ever a time when you agreed with them, or have you always liked the music more than the words?
Scratch a JB or NY fan, and he/she is going to bleed protestor. I don't think you're a hypocrite for buying and enjoying their music; you just come across as someone for whom the sound of the riffs, lead guitar, drums, keyboards, bass, IOW: their style, takes precedence over the lyrics.
I just wonder if you enjoy the efforts of those artists who embrace the Republican viewpoint (I confess I'm hard-pressed to name one) as much? Are you more inclined to an interest in their lyrics, over their style? Do you cover them in your performances? Do you get greater satisfaction from doing so?
Browne and Young are old warriors - Browne turns 60 on Thursday; Young is closing on 63. Their music has been informed by their experiences in the 60s, 70s, and all the decades that have followed. They obviously are going to look at current affairs differently from someone who wasn't around when the **** was hitting the fan in regards to the Civil Rights and Anti-War movements.
We older fans of the genre know what they're talking about when they sing "Where Were You" or "Living With War." Their lyrics are as important as their style, so we get to enjoy the whole package.
You say, "they just have it all wrong," without saying why you feel this way. Maybe you should send them one of your covers and ask them why they have it all wrong....

Hey Sallie, appreciate your reply - I'd like to continue the dialog...

(I'll limit somewhat what I'm gonna say to Jackson in the interest of brevity , but could go on and on about Neil as well) What turned me on to JB for the most part were the lyrics; his early stuff like from Saturate Before Using, Late for the Sky, Song for Everyman... at the time, I was apprenticing for and old carpenter (he was 38, me 21) who liked JB and we sort of hit it off. But I thought JB was a gifted lyricist, loved his arrangements and the players that he surrounded himself with (Lee Skylar, Russ Kunkle, David Lindley and others) I was young, not politically motivated (went to the No Nukes rally in DC chasing skirts)... yeah, must admit, pretty shallow on that level. Could relate to Before the Deluge (as one of my sisters is an earth mother) and understood that JB was rather untrusting of the conservative ideology but really dug the messages behind most of his stuff (at that time it wasn't so politically motivated, but getting there)

Maybe, it used to be like there was palpable political message but now it just seems that they have crossed over to the point where the politics is now the main thing, and I disagree with what they are saying more than I used to.

I'm with you, the Republican viewpoint is not what I hear when I put music on - I can't name anyone.

Maybe I said it poorly. I disagree with a lot of their take on things, I don't believe so much that there is such a sinister "we are gonna go to war and make our friends rich" attitude on the part of our leaders ( concerning Nicaragua, Irag etc...) as JB and NY would (I believe) have you believe.

Also (and this is something that I've been thinking for a while, and I am serious as I ever get here) one doesn't necessarily have to be in favor, support or "for" killing to support the use of military force - any more than a parent that believes in corporal punishment does so because they enjoy beating their kids or someone who supports abortion rights does so because they are "for" terminating pregnancies... there are all kinds of reasons for someone to support ideas that on their face appear to be at odds with what some else might think is acceptable human behavior - but that's not the message I hear from JB and Neil, David Crosby etc. I just don't believe it is all as simple as (IMO) they would have you think.

Maybe this is it: I used to think that these guys were soooo bright and insightful and now , when I hear Neil sing "Let's Impeach the President for Lying"... well to me, it sounds like something that Phoebe (on Friends) would come up with - honestly that's what it reminded me of... so I'm wondering more and more. Its like (and you'll probably find this amusing) THEY don't get it...

I thought Neil had a good song with "Let's Roll" that came out just after 9/11. Ever hear that one? I never heard it played anywhere but on my boat.

"Let's Roll"

I know I said I love you,
I know you know it's true,
I've got to put the phone down,
and do what we got to do.

One's standing in the iselway,
Two more at the door,
We've got to get inside there,
Before they kill somemore.

Time is runnin' out,
Let's roll.
Time is runnin' out,
Let's roll.

No time for indecision,
We've got to make a move,
I hope that were foregiven,
For what we got to

How this all got started,
I'll never understand,
I hope someone can fly this thing,
And get us back to land.

Time is runnin' out,
Let's roll.
Time is runnin' out,
Let's roll.

No one has the answer,
But one thing is true,
You've got to turn on evil,
When it's coming after you,
You've gota face it down,
And when it tries to hide,
You've gota go in after it,
And never be denied,
Time is runnin' out,
Let's roll.

Let's roll for freedome,
Let's roll for love,
We're going after satan,
On the wings of a dove,
Let's roll for justice,
Let's roll for truth,
Let's not let our children,
Grow up fearfull in there youth.

Time is runnin' out,
Let's roll.
Time is runnin' out,
Let's roll.
Time is runnin' out,
Let's roll.

And have you picked up the new CSN&Y DVD?

I was thinking that it should be required viewing here on the Board.

If you read this far, thanks.
