The ranking Republican on the House Intelligence Committee said Sunday that the panel would defy the Department of Justice (DoJ) and pursue an investigation into the destruction of CIA tapes that show the interrogation of suspected terrorists.

Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Mich.) said the panel would not stand down.

“I think we will issue subpoenas,” Hoekstra said on Fox News Sunday. “And once these witness appear in front of the committee, then I think we’ll have to make the decision as to whether we’re going to provide them with immunity or not. But our investigation should move forward.”

The lawmaker added that Congress needs to hold the CIA accountable “because they did not respond and they did not perform the way we expected them to.”

“If they had done what they are supposed to do on the tapes -- keep us informed, listen to the kind of recommendations that my colleague [Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.)] made to them -- we wouldn’t even be having this discussion today.”

Harman, formerly the top Democrat on the Intelligence panel, said that there have been parallel investigations in the past and she also supports a congressionally inquiry.

“It smells like the cover-up of the cover-up,” said Harman, who had urged the CIA not to destroy the tapes.

The Hill

Welcome news but then again, a Republican leading the charge? Why does this excite me more than a Democrat taking a stand at this point? It's sad, the Democratic leadership squandered an opportunity to fight and embody what this country stands for: Truth & Justice. They're like deer caught in the headlights and even worse, just go-along-to-get-along sell outs. Pelosi chopped Harman's mojo off when she took the helm.

"Welcome news but then again, a Republican leading the charge?"

That's really the point. All we need is a few good decent Republicans and, of course, all the Democrats. Now we're going places.

Of course these Republicans will be treated as traitors by their fellows, but the fact that some think it's worth that price tells us a world of info.

You make a good point. We need a few good Democrats AND/or Republicans who believe the rule of law transcends everything else and "break" with whatever cockamamie rules, relationships, precedent is holding them back from restoring the promise of American. I pay attention, hoping someone will step forward and wonder why they don't.

I saw something on CSPAN late Saturday nite, a rerun from Sept 2007 of a Congressional panel. Maxine Waters and Barbara Lee were there. Waters explained the dynamics of what's going on, how the anti-war Democrats are considered "trouble makers" in Washington. I was riveted listening to her describe all of the different agendas. She blasts the "corporate media." She praises bloggers. Waters speaks approx 51" into the video.

I found the video.
