It would be interesting to see a poll of how many are surprised that Foley's going to blame substance abuse for his NAMBLA-rambles. I for one saw it coming a mile away. In fact, I'd had it in a prospective post but I ended up nixing the post, not because of that prediction of the obvious.

I suspect that going into rehab keeps them out of jail, at least temporarily. Worked for one of my ex-boyfriends a number of times.

A 50+ year old man soliticing sex from a 16 year old boy is called: hebophilia. That means wanting to have sex with an adolesent. It is against the law in most states. And even if not, then its a moral issue. Are you saying that you have no problem with a 50+ y.o. man trying to seduce a 16 year old girl or boy? Sounds like it.
Abortion is not the topic. If a 16 y.o girl gets pregnant is does not matter if the sex was with her consent (be it a 16 y.o. boy or a 50 yo man) or through rape or incest. She should have the right to an abortion. HOW she got that way is a different issue. Legalities aside. Do you understand the difference? Do I need to spell it out a little slower?

I agree. They don't enter rehab, or even consider it, until its to their advantage to do so. The fact that they have enough mental clarity to make that distinction, tells me they were aware of what they were doing, and knew it was wrong in the first place. Yes, they need help, but it doesn't excuse their actions.

Today, Republican leaders said they had no idea how bad it was until ABC News revealed some of Foley's X-rated messages to the underage boys.
"No one in the Republican leadership, nor Congressman Shimkus, saw those messages until last Friday when ABC News released them to the public," said Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (R-IL).
But there were lots of warning signs.
In 2001, pages were warned to be careful with Foley.
In 2005, one page complained to his congressman about "sick" e-mails from Foley, a complaint passed on to the Speaker's staff.
Then this past spring, the complaint was again raised with three Republican leaders, including Hastert himself.
Foley wrote his lurid messages at the same time he presented himself as a champion of young people and the pages.
Some of the same pages in the chamber that day would months later receive Foley's sexually explicit messages.
"I have known him for all the years he has served in this House, and he deceived me too," Speaker Hastert said.

I have from time to time been pretty snockered myself. I never tried to invest public funds in rare coins or soliticit sex from a kid as a result. I've also known lots of friends and family members who drank a lot, and none of them did these things either.
Both his (Foley) reputed alcoholism and his apparent pedophila are aspects of a self-destructive personality, in my amateur faux-medical prediagnosis. He's just a sick puppy, and that's all there is to it. Alcoholism is a symptom of his ailment, not the cause.

On a serious note.... you bring up a valid point..... kind of. Was the page 15 or 16 at the time that the first e-mails started flying.....????? I have heard both. Secondly.... I will truley admit that I am a hypocrit on this subject. Deep down most people know that they are hypocrits as well. As the father of 2 little blonde girls.... I find the thought of any 50 something lecherous old man trying to do something to them a hanging offense......while at the same time the thought of a 20something year-old goodlooking female teacher doing something to my son........well quite frankley...... is much easier to deal with.
Maybe it has to do with how "intrusive" the act is with the minor..... I don't know. It is what it is and I see things the way I do.

I find it totally discusting that Foley (pervert) is trying to raise such a smoke screen as to hide his real problem, and in an attempt to skirt the issue of his actions.
Needless to say the Parents who should be proud to have their kids get a working knowledge of the field of politics, now have a bad bad issue to deal with, and the kids will have to deal with it for a very very long time. Think of the "backlash" that they (the Kids) will have to deal with. The smear job that's happening at this very moment. It's anguishingly painfull to think of the crap, all because the kid reported the problem a while ago and the top people in several areas of government DROPPED THE BALL! (yes that was a scream)
There should be no reason to create such a punishing action from some in the media and some on the hill torwards the victoms and the parents who made the reports, but it's happening.
These victoms need better than have to deal with the politics. They need some help. Serious supporting help. Not the lip service I have been hearing and reading.
