There's a twofold purpose to this. First, to convince conservative voters that it is absolutely essential that they get out and vote, and second, to create complacency among liberal voters, hoping some of us will think it's in the bag and stay home. If you'll notice, little by little, there are slight improvements for GOP candidates in "polls". Expect Democratic leads to shrink before election day according to these "polls". That way,
they have a reason to spin unexpected GOP victories as legitimate.
