Yet two more listings are added today. It was a sad day for those notified by the DOD that their loved ones had passed away in Iraq, as well as for their families and friends. It also was a sad day for all of America as the number of those killed continues to rise. It was also announced today that with the latest pending appropriation of funds, this war will surpass Vietnam as the most expensive military action since WWII. This is in spite of the fact that more than three times as many American forces were in Vietnam for a period of four years and that the Vietnam war lasted longer than this one. Again, please remember to include a moment of prayer and reflection in your day in honor of these 2865 who have given so much.

There have now been 21,678 Americans injured in Iraq, 11801 of whom were able to return to duty within 72 hours and 9877 who were held off duty for at least that period of time. I have no idea how many of those were transported out of the country or sufferred a permanent disability, although I do know that 6557 of them required air transport which would indicate a fairly serious injury. Those figures are as of 11/15/06.

As of 11/4/06 there were also 6570 who sufferred injuries as a result of nonhostile action and 17,995 who contracted diseases in Iraq and required air transport. There were 31,122 Americans who required air transport for a total of 46,137 totoal nonfatal American injuries in Iraq.

In Afghanistan there is no breakdown of American injuries more recent than 9/39/06. As of that time there were 5,729 Americans who had sustained injuries or contracted disease. There have been 1020 Americans injured so far in Afghanistan with 335 of them occurring this year. The injury pattern in Afghanistan has escalated every year since 2001 when we first entered the country and sustained 35 injuries. In subsequent years the totals have been 72, 97, 214, 267, and 335. This is in a country that we had been told up until recently by those in charge was under control and a model for all middle-eastern countries to aspire to.

Something that I have not addressed is the number of contractors killed in Iraq. So far there have been 371 civilian contractors killed in Iraq, 150 of whom were Americans. Almost every nationality is covered in the listing. As I gave thanks the other day with my wife, daughter and her boyfriend, I also remembered those who have fallen and their loved ones. There have now been 28,778 Americans injured in Iraq since the beginning of the war with 11801 of them being returned to dury within 72 hours and 9977 of them requiring treatment requiring them to be off duty for at least 72 hours. Internestingly, for the first time since we entered Iraq, not one of those 100 injured during the last week was returned to duty within 72 hours, attesting to the increasing severity of the attacks that have been carried out over the last week.

"Only" one more listing added today. Like I said a few days ago, the Shias and Sunnis are doing such a good job of creating havoc for each other, they have forgotten about the American forces who are also in their country. Whatever the reason that American casualties have fallen off (don't get me wrong, one is still too many for any day), I'll take it.

Lying b*st*rds!!! these guys act as if the only record of anyting that exists is in their archive. This will probably be the version that appears in Bush43's presidential library but there are too many copies of the uneditted version out in the public sector for he and his handlers to expect to get away with this. Of course, that infamous 33% will believe and argue all day that we are making things up because, after all, a president would never lie!

I knew it was too good to be true that we were experiencing a long lull in the number of our forces being killed in Iraq. Six more listings to bring it up to an even 2900. Of course, there will be those who say that people like me just bring up these numbers because we want to draw attention to the failures of Bush and his cohorts, but I think most of you know me much better than that. When you hear others mention this, remember that not all of them are doing it just for the shock value that can be extracted.

Nice post, sun. This also expresses some of my thoughts. Are you sure you haven't been reading my mind?

I was out Christmas shopping with my wife today and thoughts of these and the wounded along with their families kept creeping into my mind. I have read so many stories relating to the suffering of the wounded, the dead, and their families that they almost seem a part of my life now. I also couldn't help feeling my blood pressure rise a few points as thoughts of Bush and his cavalier attitude found their way into my consciousness as well. This holiday season just does not seem to contain the same joy that I have experienced in years past, and I know that this a major part of the reason for it. Join me in a prayer and a moment of silence for these, their families and loved ones that they may experience some joy and the peace of the season during the holidays.

Then think about those who have not been so fortunate and what the sacrifice means to them, especially at this time of the year as we all go about our normal holiday preparations. Three more Americans have given up their lives in Iraq over the last day. This makes 39 so far this month and I read this morning that Bush is set to just ignore the findings of the Iraq Study Group report and continue to do his own thing. Just what will it take for him to acknowledge that a course correction is way overdue and that over three-quarters of all Americans do not support his actions in Iraq? Please make sure to add into your prayers today (if you haven't already done so) the intention that GWB is enlightened to the wishes of the overwhelming majority of American citizens and begins to pay attention to those who elected him.

[There have now been 1062 Americans injured in Afghanistan of which 429 were able to be returned to duty while 633 required more definitive treatment including air transport. There have also been 1327 Americans injured as a result of nonhostile injuries where medial transport was required. Diseases continue to take their toll as well with now 3605 Americans contracting diseases as a result of their deployment in Afghanistan. There have been a total of 5,565 Americans transported by air for medical reasons with a grand total of 5,994 Americans sustaining nonfatal injuries in Afghanistan. There have also been a total of 356 Americans killed in Afghanstan. There have been a total of 157 fatalities sustained by the other members of the coalition of the willing. Just thought you would like a little update on that "other" war on terror that we are engaged in.
