I am sure that this has been true throughout history.

People knew more about the Beaver than the constitution. People knew more about Amos & Andy or the Lone Ranger than national history. It is much easier to name the Simpsons than to say all of the different parts of the 1st Amendment.

Just my observation.

Is your post about the teacher in Denver that the student taped? What does that have to do with the link you provided. Sorry, I'm confused. Maybe I don't get it or read it wrong...

However, did you listen to the tape? That teacher should be fired. If he said the same/similar with a different thrust about the last Pres (i.e. Clinton killed people in Ark over cocaine or his wife was a lesbian who killed Foster or he is a Stalinist, etc.) I would have felt the same way.

The teacher is a pathetic idiot. He is there to teach geography not spew his personal political agenda. Plus he sounds like Richard Dreyfus on crack, not a persuasive way to deliver a message.

Somewhat OT, but things may be getting tough for some teachers in Denver now that they're being paid for performance.

Pathetic idiot? Because he gave information to the students? Tell me oh wise one, what misinformation did he give? Where were the errors in his comments?
And nice that you fail to note this "crack addict" told his students not to take his comments as facts, they were his opinions, told them he would answer all questions and that he knew they'd be great ones, challenged them to do their own research and bring more to the table for debate.

Yeah, totally disgusting that a teacher would challenge kids to do constructive thinking and form opinions of their own. mad.gif

Would it have been okay, 10 or so years ago, that the teacher challenged the kids with constructive thinking about Pres Clintons Meena cocaine murders or the Vince Foseter murder to form their own opinions?
Onlythetruth
You cannot separate politics and geography in any meaningful way if one is to promote a true understanding of the socio-geo-political world that we live in today and have been in for some time. That the comments may have been over the top or could have been better stated is a different discussion than understanding the integral relationship between geography and the social politics and economics of the world and our country today. I would argue that challenging students to think, research. and defend their ideas is fundamental to learning to be a good citizen and that should be encouraged of all students. Just look at the Dubai ports deal with the "anti-arab racism" card being played....do not try and tell me that the geography of the UAE and its oil, money, and political connections have no interaction amongst each of these components.

Harriet Miers knows things about the Constitution. Michael Moore knows some stuff about the Constitution. Someone once wrote something about a ship called the Constitution. Some people say that they take a daily Constitutional.

What constitutes a good question about the Constitution?

Perhaps what should happen, is that the promoters of The Simpsons should collborate with the National Education Association (NEA) and make an educational cartoon about the Constitution.

The problem with the youth today is that they don't question things from "authority" figures. I would have done a little research and then been ready to ask more questions..... and have some facts to back up my own assertions. I don't agree with everything the teacher said, but if the only thing that a high school student can do to rebut an argument is cry to his daddy..... then we might as well spend all of the money and the social security fund and let this retarded generation stew in their own juices.

Makes me SICK!!!!

Think for your self is what I say... and if you don't have the ability to form a coherent argument.... then drink the kool-aid.

there is a difference here.

1. Age...... some of these kids believe in Santa...... so it makes sense that they would believe in Bush...... don't want to ruin the myth....lol. Seriously though..... age counts.

2. In this case.... there was no debate about the subject....(4th gade....) there was only punishment.

Bluedog..... I would be madder than three muthaf**kers if that happened to my elementary school daughters.

If my kids were in highschool and a teacher challenged them on their beliefs.....no problem. I would tell either one of them to find facts to back their point of view.....

I guess I am just saying that that age coupled with that response is completely uncompareable to the Denver story.

The high school is not in Denver - it is in a Denver suburb. I live just a few blocks away from that high school.
I have also heard that a lot of high school students do not even know their geography. Examples - they confuse Mexico with New Mexico, do not know where Iraq, Iran is and do not know the countries in the Middle East.
The teacher is only challenging his students to form their own opinions and not to blindly follow the teachings of their parents.

Perhaps, the teacher was trying to point out that in our society people who speak out against Bush are labeled as un-American, unpatriotic, denied access to air travel, investigated by the gestapo, etc. They are never too young to learn that to speak disfavorably of our fearless (or is that brainless) leader leads to unpleasant consequences.

Oh boy...when did the job description of a Geography teacher include "requires students to challenge the teachings of their parents". Or for any high school teacher for that matter.

If a teacher talked about how Homosexuals are perverts or how abortion is murder or how how God had a hand in developing the earth or the holocaust didn't really happen or anything else you don't agree with or find offensive, I'm sure you'd just say the teacher was just getting the kids to think for themselves. Right. Especially, if it was somewhere like hyper-liberal Marin County, cause kids should not "blindly follow the teachings of their parents."

Sorry, but that kind of crap the teacher in Colorado was spewing is uncalled for. As is any other political rantings that might occur.

I think it is a mistake to let something this extreme go without voicing your disapproval. This idiot teacher is seen as an authority figure. She is "teaching" them every time she does any exercise in her classroom or school, whether a formal exercise or one off the top of her head, like you describe here. What she taught your daughter and the other banished children that day was 1) don't question authority figures, 2) don't speak your mind, and 3) don't hold original thoughts or opinions: conform or be punished. She also publicly humiliated these children and labelled them "bad" by banishing them to "jail" for holding a different opinion than hers (and the other "good" kids who like Bush). This is terrible and totally unaceptable! At the very least, she should be reported to her principal with a copy to the school district, so it can be on her record. That way when something like this happens again, or other parents complain, perhaps she will suffer some consequence for her bad behavior. We don't need mean-spirited, lousy teachers abusing our kids in their classrooms. There are plenty of good teachers looking for work...
