I for one would hate to admit that any of this is true.... However, the passage of the 'Patriot Act' is a step in that direction, as would be the loss of our "Miranda Rights' and Constitutional Rights as they have existed prior to 9-11-2001... But I am becoming more and more skepticle about the limits to which an extremist right wing mentality could take us... Comments like "if you have nothing to hide, you should not care if they search your home, computer, library usage, etc etc"...
I had one experience in my life that made me question Authority and its decissions and actions... In the summer of1968 when I returned from Viet Nam, I was assigned to Fort Carson Colorado... Very shortly after I was assigned to an Infantry Company as a Platoon Sargeant, we were alerted late one night, packed off to Petersen Field the local Air Force base, and wisked off into the night aboard a C-130, with no information as to mission or destination... Early in the morning we were taken to a baseball park, set up camp and began riot control training in a rather hasty fashion.... At a briefing that morning the Company Commander informed us of our potential mission, which was to aide the local police and National Guard if necessary, at THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION in CHICAGO....
Having just returned from Viet Nam, combat a very vivid nightmare in my mind, and being made ready to take our Company into the streets of Chicago.... I made the mistake of voicing my reservations about being forced into what seemed like "Urban Combat" on the streets of America, with fresh images of Viet Nam in my mind.... Fortunately, we were never deployed into the streets, but also remember, the majority of men in these Army units were DRAFTED... Todays Army is all VOLUNTEER, and in my mind much less willing to question the orders from above... After returning to Fort Carson, there was an effort to destroy my career in the Army as I had served near 8 years at that time, been awarded the Bronze Star, was about to be Awarded the Silver Star which then was somehow lost or misplaced, and I was subsequently Courts Marshalled three times in Six Months, though never convicted of any of the accusations... All because of my opinions about Viet Nam which I had come to believe was a HUGE MISTAKE costing at that time some 40,000 American lives, and a society in turmoil... I was shipped off to Germany shortly there after.... It was that vindictive and intolerance of the military that told me to get out.... Its this Administrations intolerance for any decent that ads a sliver of belief in this posting of the American Gulags...
At times like these I am thankful for the EOD training I received, courtesy of the USAF.
